What Determines Your Face Shape?

Your face shape comes down to how four measurements relate to one another: the width of your forehead, the width of your cheekbones, the width of your jawline, and the overall length of your face from hairline to chin. Whichever of these is widest, and how much longer your face is than it is wide, determines which of the seven common categories you fall into — oval, round, square, heart, diamond, oblong, or triangle.

Measuring by hand with a tape measure works, but it's easy to get slightly wrong since it depends on exactly where you place the tape and how you hold your head. An AI-based detector reads the same proportions from a photo using fixed landmark points, so the result doesn't depend on your own measuring technique — you just need a straight-on, well-lit photo.

Knowing your face shape is mostly useful as a starting point for style decisions — which hairstyle lengths and partings work with your proportions, which glasses frame shapes create balance, and where to focus contouring. It's a guide, not a rulebook: plenty of people happily wear "wrong for their shape" styles and look great anyway.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is my face shape?

Your face shape is defined by how your forehead, cheekbone, and jaw widths compare to each other and to your face length. Most people fall into one of seven categories: oval, round, square, heart, diamond, oblong, or triangle. Upload a photo above and our AI will tell you which one matches your face in seconds.

How do I determine my face shape without a photo?

Measure four points: forehead width (temple to temple), cheekbone width (widest point across your cheeks), jaw width (across the jawline), and face length (hairline to chin tip). Oval faces are longer than wide with soft tapering; round faces have similar width and length with a soft jaw; square faces have similar width and length with a sharp jaw; heart faces are widest at the forehead, narrowing to the chin.

How accurate is an AI face shape detector?

AI-based detection tends to be more consistent than eyeballing a mirror, since it measures fixed landmark ratios rather than relying on subjective judgment. A straight-on, well-lit photo with hair pulled back gives the most reliable result.

Is my photo stored after analysis?

Your photo is sent securely to our analysis service to generate your result and isn't retained afterward for any other purpose.

Is the face shape detector free?

Yes — you get 2 free scans per day without creating an account. Signing up for a free account unlocks more daily scans, and paid plans remove the daily limit entirely.

Does face shape detection work for men?

Yes. Face shape is a matter of bone structure and proportion, not gender, so the same categories and method apply. Many men use their result to choose a haircut, beard shape, or glasses frame.

What is the rarest face shape?

Diamond is generally considered the rarest, since it needs a narrow forehead and jaw paired with unusually prominent cheekbones. Oval tends to be the most common.

Can my face shape change over time?

Somewhat — weight changes, aging, and shifts in muscle or fat distribution can alter cheek fullness and jaw definition enough to shift your result, so it's worth re-checking occasionally.

How many face shapes are there?

Seven are commonly recognized: oval, round, square, heart, diamond, oblong, and triangle.
